Art from the Core

Core Designs is a celebration of the rugged, unrefined beauty of the Intermountain West. The studio’s work is a dialogue between two distinct landscapes: the red-rock silence of the Utah high deserts and the snow-dusted peaks of the Colorado Rockies.

At the heart of the brand is the belief that true art comes from the core. Whether blending a fragrance or carving a block, the inspiration is drawn from the elemental strength of the desert at dawn and the unyielding spirit of the high mountains.

Born in the Desert. Made in the Mountains.

The Art of Block Printing

Block printing is one of the oldest and most tactile forms of printmaking. It is a process defined by patience, precision, and the raw beauty of natural textures.

At Core Designs, our block printing process is more than just a technique—it is a ritual. Much like the transition of seasons, each print is a physical journey from a raw block of material to a finished, soulful impression.

Here is how we translate the unrefined beauty of the wild into every piece we create.

  • Before a single line is carved, we select the paper. We prioritize heavy-weight, acid-free stocks that possess the "tooth" and strength to withstand the ink. We don't use factory-trimmed edges. Instead, each sheet is measured and hand-cut to size. This step ensures that the size of the piece is perfectly balanced with the weight of the design, making the paper an active participant in the art, not just a backdrop.

  • Every design begins as a study of movement and atmosphere. The envisioned design is meticulously mirrored and transferred onto the block. In this stage, we map out the "positive" and "negative" space, deciding which elements will carry the weight of the ink and which will remain as pure, open air.

  • Using specialized steel gouges, we hand-carve the design. This is a slow, rhythmic process that requires an appreciation for the resistance of the medium. We carve away everything that isn't the soul of the image. The result is a raised relief—a physical landscape of peaks and valleys that echoes the rugged terrain of cliffs and canyons.

  • We use rich inks that are rolled out until they reach a specific, tacky consistency. Using a brayer, we charge the block with color. This step requires a delicate balance; too little ink leaves the print ghostly, while too much obscures the fine, sharp details of the carve.

  • The paper is carefully registered and laid over the inked block. Through the use of a traditional baren or a manual press, we apply significant, even pressure. This is the "core" moment—the transfer of energy where the carved textures are forced into the fibers of the material, creating a bond that is both permanent and tactile.

  • The most rewarding moment is the slow peel. As the material is lifted, the design is revealed in its rawest form. Because every strike of the chisel and every roll of the ink is done by hand, no two prints are identical. These slight variations are the "fingerprints" of the process, celebrating the sophisticated, stripped-back beauty of handmade art.

  • Patience is as much a tool as the chisel. Once revealed, the prints are hung to air-dry in a controlled environment for three full days. This curing period allows the ink to settle and oxidize, bonding permanently with the paper fibers. Once the print has fully cured, it undergoes a final inspection. We then package each piece with the same care used to carve it. Using protective materials and sustainable wrapping, we secure your print for its journey. And now it waits.
